In 2002 after many years at various large energy companies, five dynamic individuals decided to leave their successful corporate careers and use their skills and knowledge to start a new energy company focused on mid-sized energy consumers. The timing was not ideal as the collapse of Enron was followed by other major companies failing and the credit market tightened considerably. However the market difficulties created opportunity for us.


At the time of our inception natural gas marketing companies were primarily focused on selling natural gas to one of two markets:

  1. Single location, large volume. Consumers such as power plants, utilities, automotive plants, steel manufacturers and other Fortune 500 industrial companies. These are the companies we dealt with prior to GoEnergy.

  2. Residential consumers adding up to larger aggregate volumes. (This market has all but disappeared in Ontario)

The mid-sized industrial/commercial market was underserved. With all the tools of a larger producer, we were able to introduce fair priced gas supply to mid-sized consumers. With the assistance of multiple producers we have been able to offer a wide range of products and solutions that even the largest suppliers cannot provide. Today we continue to offer flexible products to mid-sized industrial consumers in a liquid and transparent market.


In 2004 we expanded into Quebec. The expansion was a good fit for us as there is a large base of industrial manufacturing and commercial companies in Quebec. Natural gas is also sourced from the same production pools as Ontario (primarily Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin). We were able to bring the same experience and expertise to the Quebec market.


Soon after the electricity market deregulated in Ontario, we began to offer electricity supply. Although there are many differences in the electricity market (such as having about 80 electric utilities vs. 2+ gas utilities in Ontario) electricity is transported and priced with many of the same terms and conditions as natural gas. We are able to offer many different options in an increasingly complex market.


In 2014 our volume increased by over 25% when we entered an agreement to manage the natural gas portfolio for a new partner. Our proven internal processes and well trained personnel allowed us to easily migrate the increased volume into our systems.  


Our head office has been at the same location in Waterloo since the beginning and we underwent a major office renovation in 2015.


After almost 15 years we have stayed true to our roots. GoEnergy has stayed out of the residential business and has remained focused on companies with energy budgets of $2,000 - $200,000 per month. GoEnergy currently supplies over 200 businesses. The ever changing energy market dynamics in Canada have allowed us to be creative and develop products that are unique to the marketplace.


Customer service has always been important to us. Beginning with a friendly voice answering the phone to individual detailed usage information and contract reporting. We are continuously developing systems to improve efficiency and accuracy in everything we do. What was once done with phones, fax machines and spreadsheets, must now be done with secure data exchange and sophisticated CRM software. With all the new technology in the energy industry, we understand that this is still a relationship business.


At our place of work, we have created a family oriented culture. Employees have been with GO an average of 10+ years. Industry expertise and our internal processes are shared throughout the organization. We do not have commissioned sales agents allowing our salespeople to focus on developing long-term relationships while providing value and doing what’s in the best interest of our customers.


Helping out in the community has always been important to us. Each year we close the office for a day and work as a group at one of the local volunteer opportunities. In the past we have sorted food at the Food Bank, dug ditches with Habitat for Humanity and served food/washed dishes at St John's Kitchen.
